Technical Information

1. What is Super HAD CCD?
Super HAD CCD is a trademark of Sony Corporation. The Super HAD CCD is a version of Sony's high performance CCD HAD (Hole-Accumulation Diode) sensor with sharply improved sensitivity by the incorporation of a new semiconductor technology developed by Sony Corporation.
2. What is EXview HAD CCD?
EXview HAD CCD is a trademark of Sony Corporation. EXview HAD CCD is a CCD that drastically improves light efficiency by including near infrared light region as a basic structure of HAD (Hole-Accumulation Diode) sensor.
3. What is IR LED?
IR LED is a LED which emits infrared radiation (light) when certain amount of current flows through it. It is used as a light source for certain CCTV cameras to improve their night vision capability. The more IR LEDs (or stronger IR), the longer visible range a camera can see at night.
4. What does the "Effective Pixels" specification mean?
The number of effective pixels is a total number of elementary pixel sensors, which contribute to the final image. In other words, this specification shows you how many pixels are actually used to display the final image, and it is directly related to the actual resolution of the final image.
5. What does the "Total Pixels" specification mean?
The number of total pixels is a total number of elementary pixels, including effective pixels plus unused pixels around the edges of an image sensor.
6. What does the "Horizontal Resolution" specification mean?
The horizontal resolution is defined by the number of horizontal elements that can be captured by a camera and reproduced on a monitor screen. Basically, this specification tells you how many vertical lines can be counted for the captured image. The higher the resolution, the more details you can see.
7. What is the "Day & Night" feature for?
This feature tells you whether a CCTV camera can be used in both day (with sufficient amount of light) and night (with insufficient amount of light). A normal CCTV camera, without the "Day & Night" feature, can capture a distinguishable image only when sufficient amount of light exists where the camera is installed, while a CCTV camera with this feature can capture an image even at considerably low illumination level. The "Day & Night" feature can be realized with a variety of technologies, such as OLPF, DSS, ICR, IR LEDs, etc.
8. What does the "Min. Illumination" specification mean?
Illumination is a measure of the intensity of light. The minimum illumination specification shows how small amount of light a camera requires capturing a distinguishable image. The required minimum illumination is generally laid down between 1 lux and 0.01 lux with low-end Day & Night cameras and near or under 0.0001 lux with high-end Day & Night cameras.

Illumination (Lux)

Example

0.0001

Dark cloudy night

0.001

Moonless clear night

0.01

Quarter moon

0.1

Full moon on a clear night

1 ~ 10

Street lighting

100 ~ 1,000

Home / office lighting

1,000 ~ 10,000

Overcast sky

10,000 ~ 100,000

Sunny with some clouds

Over 100,000

Sunny

9. What does the "Electronic Shutter Speed" specification mean?
The shutter speed is a measure of closing and/or opening time to adjust the amount of light to an image sensor for a proper exposure. To capture a clear image, an image sensor must be exposed to the light properly, and the amount of the light must be adjusted in time. For an example, if you need to capture an image of a fast moving object with a normal camera, you can see that fast shutter speed freezes the action of a moving object, while slow shutter speed creates the blurring effect if the shutter speed is not fast enough to capture the moving object. Since a CCTV camera is supposed to capture an image of a moving object, the faster shutter speed is preferred.
10. What does AGC stand for?
AGC stands for Automatic Gain Control, a section in an electronic circuit which has feedback and regulates a certain voltage level to fall within predetermined margins. In other words, this circuit automatically checks the brightness level of the video signal to keep it at a consistent level.
11. What does ALC stand for?
ALC stands for Automatic Light Control, a part of an automatic iris lens that has a function similar to backlight compensation in photography.
12. What is the Auto Iris lens?
An auto iris lens is a lens that has a capability to automatically adjust an amount of light for a proper exposure. Auto iris lenses are primarily used in applications where light levels vary.
13. What does BLC stand for?
BLC stands for Back Light Compensation. This function is used to correct an image, which is overwhelmed by brightness due to excessive light. The BLC function allows the subject to appear brighter and in details.
14. What is the varifocal lens?
A varifocal lens is a lens which focal length can vary. This kind of lenses is generally used with a camera which has a zoom function.
15. What does the White Balance function do?
White Balance is an electronic process used in video cameras to retain true colors. This process is performed electronically on the basis of a white object in the picture.
16. What is the focal length?
A focal length is a distance from the lens to the surface of an image sensor when a subject is focused. The shorter focal length, the wider field of view is. In the other hand, the longer focal length, the narrower field of view.
17. What does the WDR feature do?
WDR stands for Wide Dynamic Range. This feature helps a camera get a clear and bright image of a subject in more details, where the bright and dark areas are intersected, such as near door and/or window areas.
